Changing seasons

Fall is here! I’ve always had some discord with this season, I never could pinpoint why until last year when I felt no fall pressure and realized that my days since I was five were spent gearing up for the busiest time of year, school and sports began in the fall! I completed my own education and then moved in to a college education! When I wasn’t in school my self I supported children who were and coached athleats who’s busy time too began in the fall! Then when I finished my education I went on to work in the post secondary world where once again the busiest time of year was fall! I never truly appreciated the season and all its beauty! Then my daughters were born and my career path changed! Causing reason to pause as the cooler weather rolled in and I have now come to love this season! It is beautiful with all the color and fragrance! Tasty harvest meals are prepared that are only possible with the changing of the season! I can now take pause and breath in the cool crisp air, sit in the glow of the fire, or watch as the leaves fall from the trees! I know that in only a few short years fall will once again be the busiest time of year with my own children starting school! I only hope that when that time comes I can remember that there is so much beauty in this season and if only for a moment take pause in breathing it all in!

Enjoy the fall everyone, even if there is a little snow on the ground!!

Pigs

Happy Announcement!

One of our sows has farrowed and her babies have arrived happy healthy and so cute!

image

Of course they chose to arrive on a night where I had headed in to town for groceries. Steve sent me a picture from the barn while I was loading the cart up with necessities from the grocery store. I couldn’t get out of there fast enough. By the time I arrived home our friends had already arrived too and were out in the barn! I headed right out and was so excited to see them! Referring to the Piglets – good to see friends too but they just aren’t as adorable! 😉

They were so tiny and still are. A few days have gone by since they arrived now as I write this post and they get more and more playful every day. They will all hang out in the barn for a while longer at least until they get a little bigger and then they will head outside for fresh air and fresh food. They are already interested in mom’s food!

Gert is such a great mommy pig and has taken such great care of her little ones. I know it is common to have issues with the pigs and their young but this has been a wonderful first go for us, all 7 babies are doing so well and she is always aware of where they are and who is in the pen! I can sit and watch them and she only warns me to stay back from her babies when I get close to the panel that separates us!

We are looking so forward to Sue having her babies next! – Update coming soon!

Sale Day

Sale Day

Screen Shot 2016-05-24 at 11.48.49 AM

We have made our way out to a few sales this year. They have been fun filled eventful days. Three children in tow makes for long days. Thank goodness for friends and family who join us for all our adventures, especially my sister who is always eager to come along for the festivities and to help out chasing a toddler or two around!

We headed out to a live auction sale with 6 birds and 4 dozen fertilized eggs at which we didn’t bid on anything ourselves so came home up! Sales are always a good time to sell there is never a shortage of people wanting to increase their current stock or try out something new, odd, or unusual! We have fallen in that category of sale shoppers in our past trips.

The other sale we went to was more of a farmers market style where everyone had booths set up selling their animals, and homemade stuff! We found some buff orpington chicks there as well as a couple other breeds we thought we should try out. I am really wanting to keep our chicken numbers down as we move into our pig farming venture but it will be nice to have some hardy birds who are also good layers around for incubating next spring as we need more, and maybe take to next years spring sales!

Both sales were extremely busy and because the spring animal sales in this area are so limited it was just a mess of people and animals. We had a lot of fun of course the girls ran and ran and checked out all the animals at least twice. Jordan was quite upset in fact that the animals were in cages and kennels and continuously attempted to set them free! Morgan is less excited about large crowds and only got down out of someones arms long enough to check out the animals but wanted to be carried where she could see what was happening for moving around! Henry slept through of course! They continue to show me how different they really are every time we do something new!

Tomatoes and other Weekend Adventures

Thanks to our super awesome neighbours we have four Tomatoe plants in full bloom all ready and some are even producing fruit! All are now out on our south facing fence in their new containers my husband built out of old barrels! South facing for maximum sun exposure means they’ll have to be watered every night, they are so beautiful and I can’t wait to start enjoying the fruit they produce!!

It has been a wonderful weekend, spent with friends and family and working hard on our farm! Much of the graden is now weeded and we are feeling like we have a handle on the weeds this year, it’s still early in the season but I hope it’s not going to get away on us as it has in the past!

The kids all got some much needed outside time, helping with chores before play time! Finding eggs in the chicken coop is always a fun game and playing in their vary own farm based sensory bins, chicken feeder and water trough! On the farm there is little need to spend too much money to build sensory bins or set up activities as such, although I’ve looked at lots and have liked the ideas! The girls got some riding time in on their horse and “fell off” a few times (controlled of course by dad) they both learned to hang on after the second time hitting the ground! And Henry had some great lounging time under the tree in the back yard  Morgan even brought him a worm!

We enjoyed a yummy Father’s Day cheese cake today chocolate chip cookie cheesecake! Stay tuned for the recipie!

It was a great night for a BBQ and we all enjoyed out meal and dessert on the deck!

Have a happy week!!

Farm Floods 2016

Our farm yard has flooded! Luckily the sows have been moved to the barn and away from the danger of the flowing water thru their pen! The little creek that flows thru the barn yard has come up so high it’s now running over the walking path and into the feeder pigs pen too! Steve went out and moved their food to higher ground last night and as their pen  is so large there is still a lot of space that the water hasn’t taken over! The horses are not overly impressed with the falling rain and have taken to standing under the  shed while the weather is bad!

All in all things are ok here and much worse in some of the nearby communities but there certainly is a lot of water!

Stay dry!!
